| The Shiba is the smallest of the Japanese native breeds of dog and was originally developed for hunting by sight and scent in the dense underbrush of Japan's mountainous areas. Alert and agile with keen senses, he is also an excellent watchdog and companion. He is compact with well developed muscles. Males and females are distinctly different in appearance: males are masculine without coarseness, females are feminine without weakness of structure. (taken from the AKC standard for the Shiba Inu) Shiba Inu's are a very intelligent and independent breed. They are not for everyone. They can't be trusted off lead. They are obedient, when they want to be. They are good with children if both they and the children are respectfull of each other. Some can be aggressive with other dogs, especially with dogs of the same sex. They are a wonderful breed if you take the time to do your research and know what to expect.
